RRR "The War on High Schools"
In Wendy Kaminer’s essay, “The War on High Schools” (2001), she suggests the idea that the freedom of high school students has been stripped from them due to a uniformed dress code. Kaminer creates the idea that the students are imprisoned and unable to freely express themselves. She did this by showing the way they were disciplined because of how they dressed. This piece was written to exert the issues amongst many high schoolers. The intended audience is the school system.
In the reading, Kaminer suggests that high school administrators have gone too far with punishing students for expressing their rights. I understand where the author is coming from, but on the other hand, I also understand the schools’ point of view. While I strongly believe in students having rights, I do feel as though extreme foul language in front of teachers or experimenting with drugs is unacceptable. However, high school is where kids should be able to discover who they truly are, but how is a kid supposed to discover themselves if they can’t express how they feel without getting reprimanded?
Kaminer’s use of pathos strengthens her claim on how school administrators are crossing the boundaries.  After reading this the audience would be furious at the school administration.  Their job should only be making sure every child is getting their education.  Kaminer uses strong language to backup her claim.  “Why do we treat students like criminal suspects?”.  This is a very strong statement showing how the school administration is handling the students.  Another strong claim is when she says, “Those students who dare to use their speech rights to protest such draconian restrictions on speech are liable to be punished severely.”  This shows how students do not have the right of speech within schools, and they cannot stand up for their rights without being punished.  With these appeals to the audiences emotions they will surely be ready to go with Kaminer’s claim.
